The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. - Psalm 19:7-9
the history of God's law.
God's law is the pinpoint of His morality and holiness. in plain words, the law means commandments that God brought forth for the sake of human beings in their process of reconciliation & sanctification. it all begin on the day adam & eve fell, and everything was revealed. From that, with all the sin of humanity, until Jesus came there had to be commandments set forth according to God's design and wisdom in accordance to innocence.

whoever chose to live in an eternity without God's presence. To live without God's presence is to not have a relationship with God as His child. To access a relationship with God, one has to believe that His son died and rose on a cross as the final atonement for the sins of humanity, so that we could receive the Holy Spirit and be in communion with the Lord on earth and in Heaven--a free gift done solely for our reconciliation. if you don't have the Holy Spirit, your soul is unprotected. as a holy God, He hates sin and won't make space for it in His presence. an on-the-run ruthless criminal you recognize shows up outside your door & expects you to let them stay at your house. no reason given except that they heard you're a good person, so you're supposed to let them in. knowing how the person is, you say no. you're not letting a stranger, a criminal at that, into your house, it's a safe space for you & your loved ones. when they're put away for their crimes, they blame you for them being caught, accusing you of being a phony. if you had let them in they wouldn't have been caught. tell me---is it your fault?
the bible says Jesus came to fulfill the law. doesn't that mean it's still valid?
Jesus in response to a pharisee said that it is not what goes into your body that defiles you, but what comes out of your mouth. And He reminded them of the hypocrisy of their words by saying that they claim to profess the importance of honoring your mother and father until it comes between them and the money they overtax due to greed & tradition. He also explains how the prophets of the OT were always exclaiming and leading the way for Him, who would be the new covenant and final atonement for the sins of humanity. So yes, Jesus was not saying to disregard God's word from the old covenant, but to specifically find the cleansing of their sins redefined by a different code: belief in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, making yourself known to the Father and baptized in the Holy Spirit. As for the laws, stuff like tattoos and piercings and what not, the Lord works with everyone according to the convictions the Holy Spirit sets forth in them. anything that He feels is not good for you personally, He will let you know and help you. remember, what He says is not good for you may be ok for someone else--that's why they're called personal convictions.
