what is sin?
death
you may or may not have heard the phrase, "the wages of sin are death". think of it as when you work and then get a paycheck, except the work is sinning and the paycheck isn't money--but a death sentence. this is because when the original sin happened and humanity was cursed, God said from dust you came and to dust you shall return. Also, the opposite of being alive in Christ is dead in sin. We as followers of Christ are saved through belief in Jesus Christ as our savior from spiritual death, which is why we have the Holy Spirit as a sign of salvation and our relationship with God--which makes us God's children again. When we die physically we will still be alive spiritually. when you choose to abide by sin and against the commandments of God, you ask for turmoil in your life without God's presence to assist you.
rebellion
John 14:21
the opposite of obeying is disobeying, which is synonymous to rebellion. going against the rules to do your own thing. choosing to turn to witches, divination and fortune tellers instead of God. having sex outside of a holy & protected covenant and defiling your body which is where the spirit of God dwells. lying, stealing, lusting, etc. when you go against what He has said is best for you to do, you're choosing to trust more in your own intelligence than God's, bringing calamity on yourself and birthing pride, which God detests. when you invite death into your life it's going to show up, and it's not gonna wanna leave. however, He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world, so you don't have to worry about fighting your battles if you take advantage of the salvation Jesus brought to you.
unaffected by human effort
only God can fend off demons and spirits. Jesus is able to fight battles for you because He is our savior and holds the power in Him, being that He's God. however, it's only through asking the Lord for help and surrendering to Him that He can help you with physical battles, like consistency in practicing a healthy diet and character improvement for better relationships. we only have authority through what God has given us through Christ, and so we can speak God's word and walk in the armor of God to get through life and battle sin. but we cannot do it on our own.
"you can't judge me!"
let's first be clear. the bible says that we shouldn't judge those outside of the church, because God will. 1 corinthians 5:12. however, as for those who proclaim to be Christians, you most definitely have the right and are exhorted to hold accountable your fellow brothers and sisters. it's wise to use discernment, and make sure you're not concerned out of haughtiness instead of love. matthew 7:3-5, psalm 101:5, ephesians 4:29. likewise if you're actively in sin and a fellow brother or sister corrects you out of concern and righteousness, telling them they can't judge you is not a sign of spiritual maturity. you are expected to feel conviction when you're called out on your sin, that's the mercy of God letting you know you're in the wrong. if you continue to be dismissive towards correction and wonder why you don't feel convicted anymore, it's not because you were right. romans 1:28-32.
